I am slightly curious to see what happens for a few reasons,
1) Finally it seems that (some) Americans have a brain and have noticed that the big corporations and government are in fact the same thing (or at least in bed together) and are a little bit pissed off.
2) The global economy/political system is so linked that anything that happens in the US will influence the UK & Australia
3) I am sure there were others

Basic jist, the people at the top have all the money. No one else has anything else to spend… economy stalls.

As Tony Blair worked out a mantra of “tax the rich” is never going to get the votes of aspirational workers (and for the most part the Occupy Wall Street people have avoided this). A mantra of “close tax loopholes, ban tax havens and regulate (and enforce regulation) the banks and other businesses” is less catchy but probably closer to the point.

(Good Friday, Easter Monday, the Royal Wedding, 1st Monday of May).

To celebrate the Royal Wedding myself and Bean (mate from London) decided to hang out at the beach in Portugal. Obviously flying straight to Portugal would be a bit boring, Barcelona is a far more convenient place to start.

I can’t remember anything spectacular about Barcelona, I saw an old church, climbed something tall. Met a German called Fritz with a Bob Marley obsession and some Israeli’s who put up with me over beers for a few days… despite the fact that the only Hebrew I know is “5 minutes Breasts”. My Hebrew Lesson.

From there I went to Madrid, where I did a few more touristy things but completely failed to take any photos. I will give a recommendation for New Europe Tours. After wandering into town with no plan I found these guys with a big red umbrella offering “Free Tours”. The price seemed right so I tagged along and thoroughly enjoyed it. I learnt many things about Spanish & Madrid history mostly I remember The Habsburg Family who had a fondness for sleeping with their cousins. I believe the Spanish all love their current monarch Juan Carlos too. He did some good things allowing the transition from Franco to a Democracy.

After that I met some guys in the Hostel and we went out and found beers the size of our heads!

The following day wandering around town I bumped into some people from the free tour, apparently the same company run a “tapas tour”. Which is basically a pub crawl with (Spanish) food. Again no photos but it was tops, the tapas itself was a bit disappointing but following on from the tour some of us continued the crawl with less food and more Sangria.

Next Stop, Lisbon! Lisbon was tops I am sure the experience was helped by finding the Alfama Patio Hostel Which is probably the coolest hostel I have ever stayed in, big clean rooms, friendly staff & guests, a well stocked fridge and in an awesome location. Also in Lisbon I caught up with Bean & his missus Peru who compete for silliest nicknames.

We spent 6 days in Lisbon and made it to the beach on one occasion (it rained). Bean has a theory that if you don’t know the history of anything you should make it up. Which lead to Lisbon having an amusing history of being conquered by just about everyone. Humour was added by our new friend Michael who we met in the hostel who was convinced Portugal was some kind of backwater… he was irritating while he was there, but provided many jokes once he left. Particular amusement when his mum phoned the hostel to check he was OK.

I also recommend Sintra and the Pena Palace as places to go if you ever visit Lisbon. Anyway, more photos if people are interested.

Ugandan Style Roofracks!

So if you could pick an ideal place to lose your roofracks. A car park at 10 mph or under would be nice. A Motorway, in the right lane at exactly the speed limit would be less nice.

I can’t be bothered doing the maths, but I am fairly certain that two kayaks is under the weight limit for a decent set of roofracks, and bending shouldn’t happen

Anyway, now stuck at the side of a fairly major road. With two kayaks that you have had to drag off the road (in a hurry) neither of which will fit inside your car. And you no longer have roofracks. Bugger! Time to get creative.

So, Last FM is an internet radio style website. That claims to learn your taste in music and recommend new stuff. Basically, I think it does pretty well. A couple of weeks ago it introduced me to Spunge so using grooveshark another favourite internet music site of mine I investigated further and discovered they do indeed rock!

Sunday, they played at the o2 in Angel. Less than £10 for a band I had never heard of 2 weeks ago… they rock.

Other than my speed & the general heat, it was a pretty good run. Fairly scenic lots of support along the route, reasonably flat. The proclaimers playing on the PA at the start seemed appropriate.

Anyway, painful, could have, should have done better but I nearly killed myself on the day. The key is in preparation, and for some reason I still enjoyed the overall experience.

Not including any photos with this, as I have seen myself in pain from various other runs I don’t even want to think about how I look in this one.

PS. Big thankyou to Tamsin and Thom for a floor to sleep on and some good company the day/night before. Edinburgh as general rule looks very nice.

At the start of the election campaign I was vaguely excited about being in a marginal seat (as opposed to the safe liberal Hornsby).

I now feel slightly more jaded and that (british) democracy is a joke*. So my current rants:
1) In a marginal seat your vote in theory counts more http://www.voterpower.org.uk/oxford-east but in a first past the post system it only counts if you like one of the top two parties, in my case Labour and Liberal Democrat. As I was fairly unlikely to vote for either of these two, seems like a fairly dud choice. So big ups to the Australian system of preferential voting so you can vote for a minor party without “wasting” your vote.

2) Constituencies are a really flawed system, if someone can explain how the Lib Dems get 22% of the vote nationally and 8% of the seats in parliament while meanwhile Labour have 29% of the vote and 38% of the seats. And that this in theory represents the will of the people? It might have worked in the days when your local member of parliament cared about local issues but in the days when no one votes against party lines its a joke.

3) The speaker of the house… in a birtish tradition that makes a mockery of the every one gets a vote. The speaker of the house is a regular MP, but no major parties will run against him. Effectively giving the voters of Buckingham a choice of one!

4) They are all full of shit anyway! I am sure its an international problem but in a world of mass media appearances are more important than substance and certain subjects are too politically sensitive for anyone to vary too much, you must be pro military, tough on crime, sensitive to the needs of big business and if house prices fall its a sign of a ruined economy…. and think of the children…

*always had slight leanings towards this theory any way.

Unfortunately, due to the incredible growth in numbers of applicants, we have decided that we cannot continue to operate this system in future.

However, we acknowledge that it would be unfair to remove this well established system without notice so instead, we have decided on a phased withdrawal of the system over the next few marathons by introducing a Priority Online Ballot Entry Scheme for the benefit of all previous applicants with at least 2 rejected ballot entry applications in 2009 and 2010.

Our records show that you have made 4 consecutive unsuccessful applications and as a result we are offering you the opportunity to maintain your record of consecutive applications in the ballot by following the link from this special invitation email to the Priority Online Ballot Entry System and completing your registration in advance of the main public ballot, which opens on Tuesday 4th May.

The username and password provided below are exclusively for your use and cannot be used by anyone else.

You will retain your place in the Priority Online Ballot Entry Scheme until you either obtain a place in the race through the ballot entry process in the normal way, or you qualify under the ‘five times consecutively rejected’ rule highlighted above, whichever comes first.

Other than that my tips to the organisers

Unfortunately, due to the incredible growth in numbers of applicants, we have decided that we cannot continue to operate this system in future.

Don’t stick the application ballot online… You had to be lucky to get in when the ballot involved a walk to a sports shop and a postage stamp, weed out the less keen by sticking a few hoops to jump through if the excessive number of entrants couldn’t be bothered to walk to the shop, how will they cope with 6 months+ of training.

Also this is a prestigious running event, put in a requirement to have completed a race before. Any race 10km, half or full marathons… Seems like a slightly elitist view but with this would still leave the entry as the easiest bit, and I am bitter from 4 failed entries when muppets walk round in 6 hours dressed as a camel… or possibly even dressed as a muppet. (Actually fancy dress is fine… as long as you are a runner and have put in the training, and don’t take my spot)

So the weekend of the 21st was Reading Half Marathon, which was all round tops! It was good to have some company. Saturday paddle, followed by a pre race dinner with Daffs, Greg, Andy and Kate (spag bol). Then joined by Rachel at the start line.

Awesome run, something like 12,000 entries apparently 30,000 supporters. Awesome course, people lining the streets cheering most of the way round, about 4-5 bands set up in driveways for as you run past, an unofficial drinks station at one of the pubs (I didn’t stop for a beer, but at least on person near me did and he got a HUGE cheer), an unofficial Jelly Baby stop with a stereo and “eye of the tiger” on a continuous loop. Finished off in the Madjeski stadium, which while its not as spectacular as the Athens stadium… was full and loud… Pub in the afternoon… favourite road run yet.

Fairly spontaneous entry on an acquired number, so official records will show that Diana Clark got round in 1hr37min33secs. Nice work Di!

Following the success of Reading I decided to repeat the formula. Saturday paddle, Ogwen and the Dee in North Wales are a bit of an upgrade on paddling upstream on the Thames. Pre race dinner of spag bol. Then up in the morning for a run.
